    Community spirited town with several well-respected schools

    Diss is a small historic market town close to the Waveney valley on the Norfolk/Suffolk border whcih dates back over 500 years.

    The town was selected to take part in a trial of the Italian Cittaslow ‘slow city’ schemes. The aim of which is to do away with fast food and condensed traffic and promote a slower more healthier pace of life.

    Diss is classed as a crossroads town – lying on the highway from Norwich to London (the A140), and the road between Thetford to Lowestoft – which makes is a good commuter hub for the region.

    Another part of the town’s allure is the reasonably priced. There are a range of house styles dotted throughout the narrow winding streets of the centre.

    Property Prices in Diss

    The average property price in Diss is currently £312,541 as of May 2019, with prices rising slightly by 2% over the last year, according to property market experts, Zoopla.

    In terms of property types, flats in Diss sold for an average of £128,314 and terraced houses for £211,971.

    Many of the roads close to the centre are dotted with little pink cottages which date from the 18th Century and have period features such as wooden beams and inglenook fireplaces.

    Mixed in between are some very lovely Tudor homes too, which are in high demand and are snapped up very quickly.

    Popular roads include Croft Lane and Roydon Road along with the nearby hamlets of Palgrave, Suston, Scole, Burston and Dickleburgh where you will find plenty of nice detached and semi-detached homes.

    Local children are catered for at the town’s three highly regarded primary schools. These include Diss Infants, Roydon Primary and Palgrave CofE Primary, all of which have been rated ‘good’ by Ofsted.

    These schools feed into the popular Diss High School, set on an attractive site at the north-eastern edge of the town with 880 pupils currently.

    Sixth formers are taught in ‘Uplands House’, a large adapted Victorian House on the same site with its own bistro.

    The school and its sixth form were also awarded a grading of ‘good’ by Ofsted following the last round of inspections.

    There are also several alternative colleges to consider, however the closest one is West Suffolk College, 22 miles from Diss.

    The college is a member of the University of Suffolk and provides a range of apprenticeships and undergraduate degree courses.

    Living in Diss

    Diss may only have a small population of around 7,000 residents but the catchment area also includes surrounding villages and hamlets.

    The area is home to Diss Mere, one of the deepest natural inland lakes in the country. There is also Diss park, a large area of parkland with play equipment, picnic areas and a small refreshment kiosk.

    A refurbished leisure centre offers a range of energetic classes for all ages from swimming and gym facilities to sauna and steam room sessions.

    Shopping is also well catered for and centred around four courtyards: Cobbs, Norfolk House, Hales and Will. All boast a wonderful array of shops and, of course, there is also the historic market.

    In 1152 Richard de Lucy received the right to hold a market in Diss. Diss Market still takes place every Friday in the centre of the town. It offers many different stalls including locally produced fruit and veg, specialist fine cheeses, country clothes, domestic products, garden products and much more.

    For more leisurely pursuits, tee off at the town’s golf club whose scenic course dates back to 1903. An 18-hole course which sits on the outskirts of Diss on the Suffolk/Norfolk border.

    Nearby is the historic city of Norwich, the charming Norfolk Broads and the beautiful Norfolk coastline. All are within easy reach of the lovely town of Diss.
