The city recently completed the construction of a new leisure centre, costing £13.5 million, which includes a cinema, a sports complex and swimming pool.

Widely known for its stunning 12th century cathedral, Ely is a city full of old world charm and historical treasures, which is why so many flock here for days out and long weekends.

Famous past resident Oliver Cromwell lived in Ely for 10 years before heading south into Westminster to become an MP. His past home is now a museum, complete with haunted bedroom.

In recent years, many film production companies have used Ely for on-site locations, including Al Pacino’s Revolution, The King’s Speech, starring Colin Firth, and Netflix’s highly popular TV series The Crown, shot at Ely cathedral.

Unknown to many, Ely is technically an island, since the city sits on a massive 85 feet tall lump of clay, which makes it the highest tract of land in the damp old Fens.

Laying on the Great River Ouse, Ely is a city that frequently enjoys the spoils of the water, albeit not quite to the same degree as its main rival Cambridge’s yearly boat race. During Aquafest, the locals pile onto makeshift rafts and get soaked doing all sorts of other crazy activities on the river during the summer months.
