Nestled in the Huntingdonshire district of Cambridgeshire, Huntingdon is a small market town which was given charter by King John back in 1205.

Famously known as the birthplace of Oliver Cromwell in 1599 who later went onto become a Member of Parliament in 1628, Huntingdon was once the county town of the historic county of Huntingdonshire.

Laying on the north side of the River Ouse opposite Godmanchester, the town is just a stone’s throw away from St. Ives and approximately 20 miles north west of Cambridge.

With an estimated 26,000 residents living in Huntingdon according to 2021 records, the town is still to this day considered to have a relatively small population. It is still a relatively quiet community that preserves much of its historic charm.

Initially founded by the Anglo-Saxons and Danes, Huntingdon developed as a bridging point on the River Ouse as a market town, and in the 18th and 19th centuries as a coaching centre.

It’s believed the town was given its name in recognition of the abundance of game that made it a good place for hunting. The same is said to have applied to neighbouring town to the west which was named after its abundance of oysters in the bay.

Positioned more than 75 miles north of London, Huntingdon is not considered a commuter town. The nation’s capital can be reached relatively easily by train however, with Huntingdon railway station having direct services to London Kings Cross station. Trains typically take around 1 hour to get into London using the Great Northern line.
