    Why Move to Austria

Austria boasts one of the highest standards of living in Europe. Alongside its Swiss neighbours it has become a popular working expat destination for those looking to further their career prospects and secure highly paid work. With luscious green surroundings and culturally diverse cities there are no shortage of activities for the family to enjoy either.

Other factors behind its illustrious appeal include:

Stunning natural scenery – Austria truly is a breath of fresh air with its six national parks filled with forests, mountains, waterfalls and green pastures

Culturally astute -Vienna is the ‘City of Music’ and has played host to Beethoven, Mozart and Johann Strauss Jr and Sr.

Year round resort-style lifestyle – the snow-capped mountains provide ample playground for ski and hiking enthusiasts alike in both the summer and winter months

Central location in the heart of Western Europe – landlocked by eight countries, the capital cities of Prague, Geneva and Rome are just a short road or rail trip away.

Affordable housing – despite its high living standards, Austria is home to some surprisingly affordable properties outside of the major cities.

    Working in Austria

EU citizens can legally work without having to obtain a work permit. However, your passport must be valid and endorsed with ‘British Citizen’.

With thriving industries, a healthy economy and low unemployment, working in Austria is a perfect destination for expats looking for work. The working landscape on in Austria is diverse and accommodating of foreign workers.

Some of the skills the country is currently looking for are in the service industry, marketing, tourism and in the IT sector. Austria has become a very easy place to start your own venture and is inviting of entrepreneurs.

Freelance service and work contracts are increasingly replacing conventional employment contracts in various fields. Seasonal work is also common in the tourism sector as well as agriculture and forestry. Fixed-term employment contracts are also available in construction, but there are also lots of part time vacancies.

    Property Prices in Austria

While the global recession has affected many European counties, Austria seems to have escaped largely untroubled. Its housing market is both stable and steady and current housing prices in Austria are high.

EU citizens can purchase property in Austria relatively easily but hiring an English-speaking estate agent is advisable.

As with all countries house prices vary depending on quality, size and location. The average cost to purchase an apartment in Austria is €4,390 (£3,900) per square metre close to the city and €3,135 (£2,785) outside of the centre.

If you choose to rent, you can expect to pay approximately €1,283 (£1,139) per month for a 3-bedroomed family home close to the centre of the city and €987 (£876) outside the centre.

    Schools in Austria

All Austrian citizens are entitled to free access to the public school system and the standard of education is considered excellent. However, it can take five years to achieve citizenship and the schools teach entirely in German.

As a result, many expats choose to send their school to a private or international school. Most offer either a home-country curriculum or an International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum. However, these schools are often very expensive.

Some employers will offer to pay for or subsidise school fees for the children of their employees so it is worth checking if you are moving as part of a relocation package.

    Travel in Austria

As a landlocked country, Austria’s transport system is extensive and highly efficient. The local transport system consists of buses, trams, Metro trains and taxis. Tram and bus services in most places run from about 5am to 11pm or midnight.

UK citizens can drive in Austria with a UK driving licence. The old-style paper UK licence is accepted but only if accompanied by an identity document carrying a photograph such as a passport.

While driving in Austria you are required by law to carry the following items. Hefty on-the-spot fines can be issued for non-compliance:

    • Headlamp beam deflectors
    • Reflective jacket
    • Warning triangle
    • First aid kit

    Healthcare in Austria

Austria has one of the best healthcare systems in Europe. Health insurance is part of the mandatory social security insurance system. Expats can access public healthcare if paying tax. The amount an individual must pay is calculated by salary level.

Because of the high standard of the public health system, very few people find it necessary to pay for private insurance. If you do, you will have access to a greater number of services and shorter waiting times.

    Currency

Austria is part of the EU’s Economic Monetary Union and uses the Euro (€) as its official form of currency. ATM’s are plentiful and cash can be withdrawn around the clock at some 3,000 cash dispensers throughout Austria.

Visa credit and debit cards are widely accepted in most places, including shops and restaurants. However, it is worth while carrying around extra cash with you to avoid the notorious ‘cashpoint walk of shame’.
