    Why Move to Cyprus?

A former British colony and military base, Cyprus gained independence in 1960. Its eastern Mediterranean location has made it a popular holiday destination for Brits looking for sun, sea and relaxation.

Although the whole island is part of the EU, Cyprus is subject to a decades-long feud between Greece and Turkey. As a result, the island is divided into Northern Cyprus (Turkish) and Southern Cyprus (Greek). Despite this conflict Cyprus is a very safe place to both live and holiday.

Cyprus has a very laidback feel —the practice of ‘Siga Siga’ if widely observed, which means ‘Slowly, Slowly’ and summaries the Cypriot attitude to enjoying family life and downtime.

Summer lasts for at least 7 months! The warm Mediterranean climate sees daytime temperatures regularly hit 32 degrees and can reach over 40 in some parts.

With a diverse landscape including snow-capped mountains, you can enjoy skiing in the snow and snorkelling in the sea in one day.

At the axis of Europe, Africa and Asia, Cyprus has an eclectic pallet, ranging from traditional Cypriot dishes of pork, fish and halloumi to potatoes and pastas.

UK nationals do not have to pay capital gain taxes in Cyprus on the sale of their British assets.

Purchasing property is relatively painless on Cyprus and has become huge business for the island.

EU citizens can purchase property in Cyprus without restrictions. As many as 60,000 British nationals’ own property on the island.

As more and more expats from around the world choose to emigrate here, the demand for new housing has increased. There are many new developments constructed for foreign investment, from permanent to holiday homes.

According to Numbeo, the average cost per square metre to buy a one-bedroom apartment in Cyprus ranges from €1343-1768 (£1192-1569).

If you intend to rent a property rent is generally cheaper than the UK. A fully furnished, three bedroomed apartment costs around €698-892 (£619-792) per month.

EU citizens can work in Cyprus without any restrictions. You must register at the Civil Registry and Migration Department (CRMD) to obtain a registration certificate as soon as you find a job.

Tourism is the largest part of GDP in Cyprus but jobs are scarce and generally low paid. Lower wages have been historically offset by a low cost of living.

However, in recent years the island has become a costlier place to live. The Cypriot Government also gives preference to local workers. Although it is not easy to gain employment, it is not impossible either. Do your research and secure work before you leave.

In recent years there has been an increase in demand for more qualified personnel in the areas of IT, accounting and finance.

    Travel in Cyprus

Public transport on the island is substandard and unreliable. The main cities of Larnaca, Limassol, etc do fair better, with the option of using buses and taxis but there is no operational railway service.

Travelling by car is the most popular mode of transport. Below are some useful tips for driving in Cyprus:

    • Driving in Cyprus is on the left side of the road as in the UK
    • You may drive in Cyprus using a valid International driving licence or National driving licence.
    • Speed restrictions are in kilometres and seatbelts are mandatory.
    • The drink driving limit is now a lot lower than in the UK and fines are heavy.

It is always good advice to familiarise yourself with the rules of the road before attempting to drive in Cyprus. For more useful tips on driving in Cyprus see the RAC’s guidance.

    Schools in Cyprus

Cyprus has state-sponsored education as well as private and international schools. All are open and accessible to expats. However, the standard of schooling varies enormously throughout the island. Speak to other expats and do some research on expat sites before you arrive.

Most expats living in Cyprus, especially those whose first language is English, send their children to private or international schools. These offer a more UK based curriculum, however, they can be expensive with tuition ranging from €3,000 to €12,000 per year.

The healthcare system in both the North and South parts of Cyprus are on par with international standards. Expats can choose between public and private healthcare.

Most Cypriot doctors and nurses are trained overseas, and English is widely spoken. Local chemists are of a good standard and usually open until 7pm each day.

Emergency treatment at government hospitals is provided free of charge to everyone, including foreign nationals. However, subsequent in-patient treatment costs will have to be paid by those who don’t qualify for free treatment.
