    Why Move to Denmark?

Denmark is a kingdom of thriving cities and idyllic landscapes, centred on the southernmost tip of Scandinavia. Danes consistently appear top of surveys of the happiest nations on Earth. There key to happiness:

‘Hygge’, which means comfort and warmness is a Danish lifestyle which places a strongonus is placed on an effective work life balance and spending time with family and friends, particularly outdoors.

52 weeks of paid maternity leave and heavily subsidised daycare which means many women return to work after the first year of having a baby.

Beautifully constructed homes which maximise natural light and quirky design while also being pragmatic for families.

Support for entrepreneurs and start-ups in innovative fields such as IT, digital comms and gaming.

A clean environment is important to the Danes. Thirty years of focused energy policy has made Denmark a world leader in renewable energy technology such as wind turbines.

Education is free for all tax payers including universities which are all free to attend.

    Working in Denmark

As EU citizens Brits can work in Denmark without any restrictions at present. However, you need to apply for a registration certificate (proof that you are legally able to work in the country) within 3 months of your arrival in Denmark (6 months if you are a jobseeker).

The Danish labour market is internationally known for its ‘flexicurity model’. A mix of the term’s ‘flexibility’ and ‘security’, this concept refers to a welfare state model that combines a flexible labour market with social security for all workers.

To work in Denmark you must get a Civil Registration number (CPR-number), a health insurance card and a tax card. Currently there is a shortage of workers in the areas of Medicine, IT, Education and Engineering.

    Schools in Denmark

Speaking English is compulsory in secondary schools and most local people can speak it fluently. The standard of education is excellent and considered one of the best in Europe.

Attendance is compulsory for children between the ages 6-16 years. All expat children will need a Danish identity number before they can enrol in any Danish school.

There are also various international schools in Denmark where a student’s home curriculum can be followed or the universally recognised, International Baccalaureate. University education is provided free to Danish citizens and is also of an exceptionally high standard.

    Healthcare in Denmark

Healthcare provision in Denmark is state-funded and of an exceptional standard. As a permanent resident when you are registered with the Citizens’ Services, you will be issued with an identification number and health insurance card which will entitle you to full access to universal healthcare.

Some expats are fortunate enough to have private health care provision included as part of their employment contract or relocation package. Because of the high quality, most Danes are happy to use public health however, particularly as these services are often very expensive.

    Property Prices in Denmark

Property prices in Denmark are expensive but are offset slightly by the high wages that most expat workers can command. Confirmation must be provided when purchasing a property that it will be used for residence all year round.

The main property-portal in Denmark is Boligsiden.dk. You will be able to identify properties that match your needs and then contact the agent for further information.

If you intend to purchase a home, it is advisable to enlist the services of a reputable lawyer, preferably one who speaks good English. The same applies for estate agents, although most can converse in English fluently making it a relatively straightforward process.

As a guide, the current average cost is kr31,629 (£3,767) per square metre to purchase a home close to a city centre. On the outskirts this price drops to kr21,107 (£2,514).

    Travelling in Denmark

The government encourages the use of public transport rather than private cars and the majority of the population use these services on a regular basis. Yellow busses operate on a zoned system. You can purchase a ticket for your particular zone making it a financially efficient method of transport.

By far the cheapest and most popular mode of transport is by bicycle. Denmark places a strong onus on leading healthy lifestyles and maintaining a clean environment. The construction of Super Bicycle Highways has been pivotal in this regard and has set an example for many other European nations.

If you have a UK driving licence you do not need to exchange it for a Danish one in order to drive in Denmark. You should make yourself aware of the rules of the road, which can differ from the UK, including:

    • Checking speed limits
    • Carrying all paperwork or documentation as required by law
    • Observing alcohol limits and any other important rules and regulations.

    Local Currency

The Danish Krone (abbreviated to Kr) is the official currency of Denmark.

There are lots of ATM’s across Denmark especially in the major towns and cities. All major credit cards are widely accepted, including MasterCard, Visa and American Express.

All our warehouses are clean, dry, secure and accredited to European standard BS EN 14873. Just speak to our surveyor for further information.
