    Why Move to Greece?

Many people from the UK have holidayed in Greece or on one of its many idyllic islands at some point.

The box-office smash hit, Mamma Mia based on the music of Abba, was filmed on the island of Skopelos. In fact, many people liken living there to the film: long, warm Mediterranean nights filled with good cuisine and company.

Expats are drawn to the lower cost of living in Greece, which is generally 30% less than its Western European neighbours. As such retirees and those on working contracts can pick up bargain priced properties at little to nothing and enjoy all the sights and aromas of this enchanting country.

Its important to remember however that holidaying in a country is different from living there. As such certain aspects of living in Greece are often romanticised.

Greece has experienced its fair share of economic problems and unemployment continues to be very high. Wages are often very low for those who do work (often not exceeding €20,000 a year).

Those who can secure well-paid work or rely on their own funds should have little trouble acclimatising to Greece and all it has to offer however. They can expect a high standard of living and excellent purchasing power. Not to mention plenty of social opportunities to make new friends.

    Working in Greece

The country welcome foreign workers and Greece’s heavy promotion of tourism means that there are usually working opportunities in this industry. Whether that be opening a business, becoming a tour guide or managing hotels.

EU/EEA citizens do not need a work or residence permit to live and work in Greece. They can enter Greece with a valid identity card or passport.

Teaching English is also a popular job and often Brits come for a few seasons for the experience and then return home.

It is worth mentioning however that the Greek Government prefers the company advertising a position to try and employ a Greek citizen first.

    Property in Greece

Buying and renting accommodation in Greece has become progressively cheaper.

Foreigners who invest a certain amount of money in Greek property have the right to apply for residency. This hasn’t benefited most locals directly, but it does present an opportunity for expats to purchase a house or apartment that suits their needs at a reduced price.

Expats would be well advised to hire a local real estate agent or ‘mesitis’ who can speak English and guide you through the process.

As a guide, the average cost of purchasing property is currently at €1436 (£1268) per square metre in the centre of the city. Towards the outskirts of the city this drops to €1272 (£1123).

It is recommended that those looking to move to Greece rent first. Renting is very cheap and allows you to get a feel for the area. The cost to rent a one-bedroom apartment in the city costs in the region of €285 (£251) per month and on the outskirt’s €243 (£213).

Legally, residential lease agreements must cover a minimum of three years. Normally, the longer the lease, the lower the monthly rent.

    Travelling Around Greece

Greece has a good public transport system consisting of railways, busses and ferries. For the most part, public transport is clean, efficient and inexpensive.

Regional railways link most main towns and cities. However, the more remote areas depend on busses which can mean long uncomfortable bumpy journeys.

Ferry services operate around the mainland and are in some cases the only means of transport to many of Greece’s smaller islands.

If you have a valid UK driving licence you can drive in Greece. It is worth noting that driving standards vary throughout the country and several people have not passed official driving tests.

Below are some useful tips courtesy of the RAC:

    • Road signs are mostly in Greek and English.
    • You must wear a seatbelt at all times
    • Gas stations are common but be aware that in many cases they don’t accept credit cards.
    • Road conditions, especially on smaller roads, are not very good and pot holes are common

    Greek Healthcare

Expats seeking healthcare in Greece are entitled to the same treatment as any other resident in the country.

However public healthcare is not of the same standard as most Western European countries. Long waiting lists and substandard care are sadly the norm.

As such, most expats opt to take out private health insurance cover. Private medical facilities are of a better standard and many of the staff will speak a reasonable level of English.

There are plenty of pharmacies and many of the pharmacists speak good English. Expats should be warned that codeine is highly illegal in Greece. They should refrain from bringing medicines containing it into the country, even with a prescription.

    Currency

Since 2002, the official currency of Greece has been the Euro (€).

ATMs are common in towns and cities. However, if you are heading further out, they can be difficult to find so ensure you draw your cash before setting of.p

Be aware also that most transactions, including in bars and restaurants are still carried out through cash only.

    Shipping My Effects to Greece

The whole moving experience can be incredibly stressful, especially so when relocating abroad. GoodMove has over 35 years of experience in the removal industry and can help make the process a lot less traumatic.

We can arrange a free no obligation home survey and quotation. It will be carried out by one of our qualified surveyors, who will able to answer any of the questions and concerns you have and offer advice where necessary.

The purpose of the survey is to determine the volume of effects you will be shipping. The cost of shipment is based on the space your effects will take up in the container. Following the visit, you will receive a written quotation.
