    Why Move to Singapore?

Singapore is a sovereign city-state on the southernmost tip of the Malay peninsula.

As one of the four Asian Tiger economies, alongside Hong Kong, South Korea and Taiwan, its openness to foreigners has presented various working opportunities to British expats.

In fact, according to the Department of Statistics in Singapore, by mid-2012, there was a total population of 5,312,400, with 40% of these being expats from all over the world. Here’s why:

The cost of living may be on the rise, the good news is that salaries are on the rise too, with expats taking home some impressive pay packets for top city and finance jobs.

Obtaining a visa as a British expat is relatively easy and there are lots of opportunities in finance, management and technology positions.

Singapore is a clean and safe modern city where parks, museums, art spaces and architectural icons are world class.

English is widely spoken and is also the business language of choice, making it relatively easy for expats to acclimatise.

There is a huge mix and diversity of cultures in such a small area. The city blends Malay, Chinese, Arab, Indian and English cultures and religions as reflected in its cultural and culinary experiences.

Many expats stay for a few years and enjoy the quality of life before return home having earned substantial sums. Others grow attached to the expat way of life and lay down roots here.

    Working in Singapore

Singapore is one of the best countries in the world for doing business, according to a recent report by the World Bank.

Not only are there lots of opportunities in some of the world’s biggest banks, multinationals but there is also huge potential for start-ups and stand-alone ventures here.

HSBC’s Expat Explorer Survey reported that the average salary of expats is $139,000 (£78,407), compared to the global average of $97,000 (£54,715) for expats living in other countries.

UK citizens can apply to become a Singapore Permanent Resident (SPR) by obtaining an Entry Permit. If you already have employment, your new employer should assist you with this as part of your relocation package. The city-state offers job opportunities in various sectors. The in-demand skills for Singapore job seekers currently are:

    • Technical troubleshooting
    • Software engineering
    • Quality auditing
    • Data analysis
    • Hardware configuration

    Schools in Singapore

Singapore has an excellent reputation when it comes to education. All levels, from primary and secondary to tertiary level, are supported to some extent by the state.

English is the language of instruction in all public schools. This said, the majority of expats choose to send their children to International schools where they can follow the curriculum f their home country or the International Baccalaureate (IB).

    Healthcare in Singapore

Expats can look forward to exceptional levels of care while in Singapore, but should bear in mind that it doesn’t come cheap

For Singaporeans and expats who are permanent residents or citizens, the public health system is rather complicated. Patients are expected to co-pay for most of their medical expenses. In return they have access to basic, affordable healthcare when it’s needed most.

Expats who are employed with normal work passes will either need to take out insurance on their own or receive insurance through their employer.

Most expats use private services for primary care but public hospitals for emergency services and more complex care.

    Property Prices in Singapore

The cost of property in Singapore is expensive and as such most expats choose to rent.

Many expats choose to live in private condo units. These typically come with excellent facilities such as playgrounds, private security, and swimming pools.

As with most busy cities, neighbourhoods differ depending on your personal circumstances.

Young professionals may want to be closer to entertainment areas such as bars, restaurants and clubs in the CBD or Marina Bay. Whereas, families will want to be near to schools, parks and supermarkets on the East Coast (districts 15 and 16).

As a guide, if you intend to rent, for a 3-bedroom apartment in the city, you can expect to pay approximately S$4148 (£2,339) per month. For a similar property on the outskirts of the city this drops to S$2582 (£1,456).

If you intend to buy a home the current average cost per square metre in the city centre is S$22,861 (£12,895) on the outskirts S$11,063 (£6,240).

    Travelling in Singapore

Singapore has one of the most cost-efficient public transport networks in the world, according to London consulting firm, Credo. The public transport system consists of MRT and LRT train services, as well as metred taxis and hop on buses.

As public transport is so efficient and much cheaper than running a car many expats do not drive in Singapore. The traffic system can be difficult to navigate and there are lots of additional rules.

If you are staying longer than one year and intend to drive you will need to convert your UK licence into to a Singapore licence by the end of your first year. You are also required to pass a theory test and submit relevant documents.

    Local Currency

The Singapore Dollar ($) is the official currency of Singapore.

There are plenty of International ATMs throughout Singapore that will allow you use your UK credit and debit cards.
