Looking to escape the hustle and bustle of modern life? Bungay could be your bag.
Bungay is an unspoilt market town close to the border on the Waveney valley where Suffolk and Norfolk meet at a sort of Mexican standoff.
There’s nothing standoffish about this town however. Boasting a delectable range of independent shops ranging from boutique fashion stores to an old-fashioned butchers and deli, there is much to shout home about.
It’s been described as Suffolk’s answer to the Bermuda triangle, a place where time seems to stand still. And while the slow approach to life may be tedious to some, for others it provides a welcome retreat from the pace of modern life.
Strong road and rail links to Norwich mean people can work in the city before retiring to the country confines of Bungay.
Throw in the versatile housing stock, including some picturesque period properties overlooking the valley and some sturdy town houses and you’ve got all the making of a viable commuter town.
Highlights include:
Good local schools with Bungay High and Ofsted rated ‘outstanding’ learning provider
Versatile housing stock containing some stunning period property on the market at competitive local prices.
Lots of local pubs, cafes and restaurants to meet a wide range of tastes and preferences.
400-acre Outney Common provides for some beautiful walks along the gentle riverbanks where you can spot all manner of wildlife.
The average price for property in Bungay stood at £266,030 as of July 2019, according to data provided by property market site, Zoopla.
This was slightly cheaper than the Suffolk average which is currently £288,35. Although prices are on the rise by 4.25% since last year.
In terms of property types, flats in Bungay sold for an average of £158,934 and terraced houses for £199,285. Large detacheds and town houses sell for anything between £300,000-£500,000 while it is possible to snap up some detached for as low as £150,000 if you venture further afield.
Bungay is a small town with a relatively modest population. It does however contain two primary schools and one main high school complete with a sixth form centre.
The two primaries: Bungay Primary and St Edmunds RC are both held in high regard locally with the latter being a Catholic school placing a strong onus on moral and emotional learning in addition to a balanced curriculum rooted in Bungay’s unique locality.
The town’s only secondary school, is Bungay High, a state secondary which has been given a ‘Good’ rating by Ofsted, the government’s education regulator following its last round of inspections three years ago.
It was praised in particular for the effectiveness of the leadership and management team as well as the quality of teaching and 16 to 19 study programmes offered by the Sixth form.
Last year Bungay was listed as one of 12 locations in the East of England to be included in the Sunday Times Best Places to Live 2018 list.
The Waveney town was praised in particular for its quaint markets, local produce and selection of community activities.
Bungay is brimming with individual character with no Costa Coffee in sight. Instead its high street is littered with charming independent shops ranging from a local deli to a local bookstore and old fashioned tea rooms.
The town even has its own local brewery in the form of St Peters, which provids interactive tours where you can get involved in the making of the beers and, of course, sample them.
Entertainment-wise there is the Fisher Theatre which was opened in 1828 but is now under the direction of the Bungay Arts and Theatre Society, formed in 1995 by five local residents convinced that an arts centre would help regenerate this ancient market town’s appeal.
It’s difficult to imagine life without it and the theatre takes pride of place at the heart of the community, providing a broad programme of arts events which have won numerous awards.
