The county of Kent borders with Greater London to the north-west, Surrey and East Sussex to the west, and Essex to the north across the River Thames estuary, not to mention Pas-de-Calais in France via the Channel Tunnel. France can clearly be seen from the coastal ferry port towns of Folkestone and Dover during clear weather.

Fondly known as ‘The Garden of England’, the south east county of Kent has a fast-growing population, last recorded in 2019 at 1.855 million people, making it the 5th most populous county in England.

The county’s iconic title is said to date back 400 years, after King Henry VIII allegedly sampled a bowl of locally grown cherries. He was so delighted with the flavour, that the county became known as the Garden of England.

Strawberries are another popular fruit grown in the county, which are supplied to the All England Club each year for the Wimbledon tennis championships.

Established in 1969, Biddenden Vineyards is Kent’s oldest commercial vineyard, producing 80,000 bottles of wine per year. All vine work on the estate is still done by hand, including pruning, canopy management and picking.

Canterbury Cathedral is the oldest in England, seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury since the conversion to Christianity began in the 6th century. Rochester Cathedral in Medway, Kent is England’s second-oldest cathedral.

Using the Javelin H1 high speed rail link cutting through the entire county, with main hubs in at Ashford International and Ebbsfleet International, London is well within reach of commuters for the majority of the county, with France also just a few minutes away via the Channel Tunnel in the opposite direction.
