Positioned just 4 miles north of neighbouring Royal Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge is a market town in west Kent situated on the banks of the River Medway.

The point where the River Medway passes through Tonbridge is quite narrow. From the High Street, it’s very easy to miss the fact you’ve even crossed over a bridge!

One of Tonbridge’s most famous landmarks is the castle, which was built on land gifted by William the Conqueror to a Norman noble family, going back over 900 years.

During the 18th century, Tonbridge became famous for producing finely inlaid wooden cabinets and boxes, known as Tunbridge ware. Pieces were frequently sold to tourists taking to the waters at the Tunbridge Wells spring.

Jane Austen has several links to the town, as her father was born in Tonbridge. Austen’s grandparents are buried in the parish church of St Peter & St Paul, with other Austen relations and friends commemorated there as well.

A few modern day famous faces originate from the Tonbridge area, including writer Victoria Hislop, Olympic athlete Dame Kelly Holmes who lives in nearby Hildenborough, and MP Andrea Leadsom who attended Tonbridge Grammar School.

Unknown to many, the largest amount of cash to have ever been stolen in the UK was taken from the Securitas depot in Tonbridge. An armed heist in 2006 led to the theft of more than £53m.
