Nestled right on the westernmost portion of the county of Kent bordering with Surrey, Sevenoaks is a civil parish market town based just 21 miles south east of London.
Popular with commuters working in the capital, this small market town has a population of approximately 30,000 people, known for it’s leafy surroundings suited to affluent, upper-middle class earners.
The name Sevenoaks originates from the Saxon word ‘Seouenaca’, given around 800 A.D. to a small chapel near seven Oaks in Knole Park. Historically part of the Great Manor of Otford, it used to be held by the Archbishops of Canterbury.
Knole House mansion, constructed in 1456, was owned by monarchs and archbishops. From around 1603 it was owned by the Sackville family, who endowed it to the National Trust in 1946.
Also entirely owned by the National Trust is the nearby village of Chiddingstone, with the exception of its church and castle. According to the National Trust website, Chiddingstone is the most accurate example of a surviving Tudor village in the county and is one of Kent’s oldest.
The town’s famous Sevenoaks School was founded in 1432, and is considered to be the oldest secular school in England.
Sevenoaks is home to the Vine cricket ground, which could be the oldest cricket ground in existence, as a match was reported to have taken place here in 1734.
Sevenoaks has had its fair share of famous residents over the years, which include Cheryl Baker (Bucks Fizz), Anton du Beke (ballroom dancer), Daniel Day-Lewis (actor), John Humphrys (broadcaster), Gloria Hunniford (TV personality), and H. G. Wells (novelist) amongst many others.
